Notes From The Road - No Shame In The Frugal Game

Look, I don’t enjoy thinking about money. I’d rather sign a bill at the end of a meal without ever knowing how much it costs then see the exorbitant amount I was just charged for chicken fingers and an ice tea. The thing is, like most people in the world, I’m not walking around with a bottomless pit full of cash at my disposal. Something I’ve been trying to rectify for years, believe me. That’s why, especially when I’m traveling, I have no shame about pinching pennies. See, the travel industry has a sneaky way of placing items on your receipt you assumed were “complimentary”. Whether it’s a bottle of water on the nightstand in your hotel room or a refill during lunch, these establishments know they’ve got us right where they want us when we’re far from home. This is why my pride takes a backseat on the road. I have no problem asking, “Excuse me, quick question, lovely neckerchief, by the way - is anything here complimentary?” It saves a lot of hassle, believe me. The last thing you want is to come up short on something you really want to do because you were paying twelve bucks a pop for… well, refills of pop! Be smart, stay on top of your finances, and pass the shame onto the places that want to charge us for things they know darn well ought to be free!
