Voter numbers show Democrats strengthen hold on California

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Voter registration numbers show Democrats are strengthening their hold on California, a state the party has dominated for years. Figures released by Secretary of State Alex Padilla show Democrats outnumbering Republicans by a nearly 2-1 margin. Independents also continue to outnumber Republicans, though narrowly. Republican registration in the state has dwindled to 24%, down from 27% at the same time before the 2016 presidential election. Democratic registration was pegged at 46%, up 1 percentage point since 2016. The new numbers also show more than 83% of eligible voters have registered, the highest percentage in 68 years.
