Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is announcing today that he will launch what he calls the largest ever coordinated campaign to beat climate change, by closing all U.S. coal plants by 2030.

UPI reports Bloomberg said his foundation has joined with the Sierra Club to launch the $500 million program, Beyond Carbon, to put the U.S. on track toward 100 percent clean energy, claiming “We're in a race against time with climate change.”

According to the Sierra Club, there are 241 coal plants operating in the country, though 289 plants have closed since 2010, when Bloomberg and their group first went after the coal industry.
