A Prayer to Remember God’s Faithfulness This Fall
By: Alicia Searl

Bible Reading:
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. - Deuteronomy 7:9

Listen or Read Below:

A few years back, when my youngest was about seven years old, she overheard a heartfelt conversation between me and a dear friend. This friend was really wrestling with her purpose and feeling confused and a bit shaken after she lost a job she deeply loved. While I didn’t have the right words to truly comfort her heart, I knew God did, so my response was simple. I reminded her of God’s faithfulness.

That night, as I was tucking my little one into bed, she sweetly asked me why I told my friend that God was faithful. While the question seemed innocent enough, after hearing the nature of her heart, I quickly realized what she was really asking. It’s a question I believe we have all asked at some point.  “What does it mean that God is faithful?”  And, even more, if He is the epitome of faith, how can we ourselves be “faithful enough” for God, especially when we are hurting or sad?

This profound question made me dig a bit into the depths of my own faith as I uncovered the undeniable character of our God. The truth is that when we enter seasons that bring uncertainty or affliction, we can come to have these unrealistic expectations of God or begin to question our own personal faith.

However, what if we approached God’s faithfulness with a pure, honest, and true Christian lens? Well, my friend, we can only do that if we dig deep into His Word, which reveals His almighty and perfect character. Oh, this is about to get good! Grab your Bible and let’s discover God’s truth about His abundant and never-failing faithfulness!

Honestly, there are countless verses on the goodness and faithfulness of our God. Promises are purposefully scattered throughout His Word, from the beginning of Genesis to the closing remarks in Revelations. Our God is so very faithful!

As believers, that means God will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6). His love is unwavering and unending (Psalm 136:26). He is loyal (Deuteronomy 7:9), kind (Psalm 145:8-9), compassionate (Psalm 103:8), trustworthy (Proverbs 3:5-6), patient (2 Peter 3:9), just (Isiah 61:8), good (Mark 10:18), merciful (Exodus 34:6), and righteous (Zephaniah 3:5). He is all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, eternal, sovereign, and holy. Faithfulness embodies His very character and nature.

You can see why it was so difficult to pick one verse to lead this devotional today, as God’s faithfulness is beautifully woven all throughout the precious pages of His word and is the heartbeat of the gospels.

Friend, if you are in a season that is yearning to come to terms with God’s faithfulness, turn with me to Deuteronomy 7. When the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt, He spoke to them through the prophet Moses. He told them that they were a holy people, chosen and treasured, and because of “His faithfulness,” the Mosaic covenant was sealed by His steadfast love (Deuteronomy 7:6-11).

Now, flip to the New Testament. In John 3:16, Luke 22:20, Corinthians 11:25, and Hebrews 8:6-13, we learn that through Jesus' selfless sacrifice, the New Covenant made it possible for all who proclaim Christ as Lord to receive forgiveness, be atoned for their sins, and inherit the kingdom of God.

Did you read between the lines there? God is always faithful. He stands the test of time and offers a grace-based relationship that allows us to lean in and find peace when the weight of the world (or our own personal world) feels heavy. He also rejoices and delights in us (Zephaniah 317 and Psalm 147:11). For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7), and desperately need God’s faithfulness to carry us through each and every season of our lives.

Let’s Pray:

O God,

You are perfect and faithful in all Your ways. Thank you for offering us the truth in Your Word. Words that capture Your very essence. Precious words we can lean on for stability and substance, and verses that blanket us with Your peace. Father, I ask that You reveal Your faithfulness to me. Open the eyes of my heart to receive it as I seek to understand the multifaceted dimensions of Your loving faithfulness. Please forgive me and have mercy on my soul when seasons of sorrow ransom my heart and lead me to believe lies rather than the goodness of Your faithfulness.

I ask this in Your holy, divine, and precious name. Amen.
