When Life Doesn't Go According to Plan

Most of us like having a plan.

We make schedules, set goals, book trips, prepare for the future, and imagine how things will unfold. Then life happens. A phone call changes everything. A door closes unexpectedly. A relationship shifts. A diagnosis arrives. A dream takes a different path.

Suddenly we're left asking, "God, what happened?"

Proverbs 16:9 offers a comforting reminder:

"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps."

This verse doesn't tell us not to make plans. Instead, it reminds us that God's guidance is bigger than our understanding. We can prayerfully move forward while trusting Him with every unexpected turn.

Sometimes God redirects us for reasons we can't yet see. Other times, the detour itself becomes part of the lesson. In every season, His hand remains steady.

When plans change without warning, our peace doesn't have to disappear with them. We can rest knowing that God sees the entire journey, even when we can only see the next step.

Tonight, release your disappointments, frustrations, and unanswered questions to Him. The God who directs your steps is also the God who walks beside you.

Prayer

Father,

Changes are hard. Sometimes I feel disappointed when things don't go the way I hoped they would. Tonight, I bring those frustrations and uncertainties to You.

Help me trust You when life feels unpredictable. When plans fall apart, remind me that Your purpose has not. Give me peace when I don't have answers and confidence when I can't see what's ahead.

Teach me to hold my plans loosely and hold onto You tightly. Thank You for directing my steps, even when the road looks different than I expected.

As I rest tonight, help me surrender tomorrow into Your hands.
