Can You Love Someone and Still Set Boundaries?

Difficult relationships often leave us feeling torn between two competing ideas: protecting our own well-being and extending the grace Jesus calls us to give. Whether you’re dealing with a challenging family member, friendship, coworker, church relationship, or someone who consistently leaves you emotionally drained, it can be hard to know what faithful love actually looks like.

In this Your Nightly Prayer devotional, Kyle Norman reflects on Philippians 4:8 and the challenge of dealing with what his wife calls “sandpaper people”—those individuals whose personalities, choices, or behavior seem to rub against us. Conflict can easily take over our thoughts. We replay arguments, build mental cases for why we’re right, imagine better responses, and allow frustration to shape how we see the other person. Paul offers a different way by calling believers to dwell on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy.

That does not mean ignoring harmful behavior or pretending every relationship is healthy. Biblical grace should never be used to pressure someone into remaining in a harmful situation. Healthy Christian boundaries can include saying no, limiting contact, stepping away from destructive conversations, or creating appropriate distance. Forgiveness and reconciliation are related but distinct, and restoring trust may require genuine change, wisdom, accountability, and time.

If a difficult relationship has been consuming your thoughts or disturbing your peace, this devotional offers a way to hold compassion and wisdom together. You can set the boundary you need without making resentment your identity. You can pray for someone without giving them unlimited access to your life. And with Christ’s help, you can protect your well-being while keeping your heart open to truth, grace, and peace.
